6th Grade Grammar

6th grade grammar is all about pronouns and parenthetical elements.  Read on for a list of the Common Core standards and what they mean, then follow the links to go deeper into each standard.

Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive).

This means writers should pay attention to the placement of pronouns in the sentence and use the correct type of pronoun each time.  For example, a subject pronoun should not be used as an object in the sentence.

Use intensive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves).

This means placing certain emphasis on a noun by using an intensive pronoun.

Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person.

This means pronouns should agree with their antecedents in terms of singular/plural and first/second/third person.

Recognize and correct vague pronouns (i.e., ones with unclear or ambiguous antecedents).

This means all pronouns should have a clear antecedent.  The reader should know what “it” refers to.

Use punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes) to set off nonrestrictive/parenthetical elements.

This means writers first must recognize when they are adding extra information to a sentence.  Then they need to choose the correct punctuation to set that information apart from the rest of the sentence.
