7th Grade Grammar

7th grade grammar is all about sentences and their parts.  Read on for a list of the Common Core standards and what they mean, then follow the links to go deeper into each standard.

Explain the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences.

This means writers should know the definition of a phrase and a clause.  They should be able to identify each in a given sentence.  Writers should also be able to explain what the phrase or clause does in a sentence.

Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas.

This means that writers should know the types of sentences and choose the best one to fit their message.  Different sentence types contain different levels and amounts of information.

Place phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers.

This means that words and phrases should describe what they’re supposed to.  Sometimes modifiers are placed in the wrong part of the sentence, making them describe something other than what the writer intended.

Use a comma to separate coordinate adjectives (e.g., It was a fascinating, enjoyable movie but not He wore an old[,] green shirt).

This means writers need to learn when to use a comma between adjectives and when there is no comma between adjectives.
