Diagramming Lesson 6

Possessive Pronouns

Possessive Pronoun - a pronoun (word that takes the place of a noun) that shows ownership

Example: My new car is a Honda. ("My" is a possessive pronoun. It takes the place of my name, and it shows ownership of the car. Here, "my" is being used as a modifier.)

Example: His is a Corvette. ("His" is a possessive pronoun. It takes the place of his name, and it also shows ownership. He owns something.)

Example: Those bikes are theirs. ("Theirs" is a possessive pronoun. It takes the place of their names, and in this sentence it shows ownership of the bikes.)

NOTE: When diagramming possessive pronouns, it is less important to identify the word as a possessive pronoun and more important to figure out the word's function in the sentence. Is the word acting as a subject, modifier, or predicate adjective? Doing so will help you diagram accurately.
