Phrases and Clauses

Definition: Phrase – a phrase is a group of words that “go together.”  It will either have a subject or a verb, but never both.

Definition: Clause – a clause is a group of words that “go together.”  A clause must have both a subject and a verb.

The purpose of phrases and clauses within sentences is to elaborate. Both phrases and clauses add information to a sentence.
